Basil is a herb that most of us use in our Italian dishes and it tastes divine. However, the value of this Essential Oil does not stop at taste.
Uses and Applications
The top use of Basil is for it’s effects on the adrenals and therefore fatigue, exhaustion and lack of energy or even just when you have drank too much coffee. Use with a lotion or carrier oil and massage into your mid-lower back to be absorbed and entered into the blood stream in less then 5 minutes.
It will naturally cool the skin making it wonderful to use during times of muscle spasms, tension, mental fatigue, or menstrual discomfort. While also lessening anxious feelings and increasing mental alertness, making it a great oil to use during work or study either massaged into the skin or in a diffuser.
Adding Basil to food is another wonderful way to benefit from its powerful benefits. My favourites are Vegetarian Bean Burgers and Rainbow Salad with Tomato-Basil dressing. Of course Basil will work beautifully in any dish that would usually use the herb either fresh or dried. All you need is 1-2 drops depending on the size of the dish, it’s always better to add one drop at a time as you can’t un-pour essential oils. Alternatively you can use Basil in a veggie capsule to reap its benefits without the basil taste.
Lastly that I will mention, Basil is a wonderful, natural insect repellent. You can apply topically, spritz or diffuse for its repelling quality. If you get bitten it is great to mix with fractionated coconut oil and Lavender to soothe bites and stings.
Basil is the Oil of Renewal and has many similar emotional benefits as it does physical benefits. As written by Daniel McDonald in Emotions and Essential Oils:
“The symptoms of adrenal exhaustion help identify the main moods that are treated with Basil, primarily: overwhelm, fatigue, low energy and the inability to cope with life’s stressors. The smell of Basil oil brings strength to the heart and relaxation to the mind. This oil is also excellent for states of nervousness, anxiety and depression.
Basil oil supports those who are under a great deal of mental strain. It brings rejuvenation of vital forces after long periods of burnout and exhaustion. Basil oil may strengthen the adrenals and restore the body to its natural rhythms of sleep, activity and rest.
Basil oil is also helpful for addiction recovery. It gives hope and optimism to the tired soul. Basil may assist an individual in giving up false stimulants of other substance related addictions. By increasing one’s natural energy, it supports individuals to achieve greater balance and health. In short, Basil is indicated for those who are weary in mind and body and for those in need of strength and renew.”
